Materials, maintenance and care
Wood, the material:
Mahogany is a hard type of wood with a beautiful color and texture, which is suitable for e.g. furniture and floors. In order to preserve the glow of the wood, regular cleaning and maintenance is important.
All mahogany used in Wolff Nordic's products is FSC certified
Mahogany has a long life, also outdoors.
Wood, maintenance and care:
Dust the mahogany with a soft cloth regularly to avoid a build-up of dust and dirt. Use a mild soapy solution and a cloth to wipe the surface of the mahogany wood. Avoid using hard brushes or sponges to clean wood, as this can damage the surface. This will cause the grain in the wood to rise and make the surface uneven. Avoid using too much water when cleaning mahogany, as the wood can be damaged if exposed to too much moisture.
Use oil specifically designed for mahogany to protect the wood from damage and preserve its color and shine. Apply a thin layer of oil with a soft cloth and allow to dry completely. Avoid placing mahogany furniture in direct sunlight as this can cause the wood to fade and dry out. If you spill anything on the mahogany wood, wipe it off immediately with a soft cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or sandpaper to remove stains.
Painted mahogany can be cleaned with a cloth and preferably warm water to remove any grease stains.
Cast iron, the material
Cast iron is known for its strength and durability. It has been used for many centuries in the manufacture of a wide range of products, including cookware, engine blocks, grates, covers, etc. Cast iron is still an important material today and is used for many purposes.
Cast iron is produced by melting iron with added carbon, which increases the iron's strength and resistance to deformation and breakdown. Today, cast iron is produced via a controlled thermal and metallurgical process.
The cast iron used in Wolff's products is of the alloy SG iron, which is tougher than the traditional gray iron. But the iron's strength and durability are retained. The raw material for all our cast iron products from our own iron foundry in Borup is industrial waste from other production in Zealand and items of cast iron that are recycled. This – combined with short transport routes in Denmark – contributes to the products' favorable CO2 profile.
Untreated cast iron patinas to the characteristic, deep brown color.
We have surface treated cast iron products, either powder coated, wet painted or treated with pigmented oil.
Cast iron, maintenance:
If the paint is damaged, a rust spot may appear locally, which you can try to remove with a soft brush or sandpaper. Be careful not to scratch or damage the paint elsewhere. Dab the hole with a primer and then quality paint for metal in the same color. Let it dry completely. A little clear matt varnish can be applied afterwards as extra protection.
In principle, untreated cast iron requires no maintenance. If you want to remove dirt, is water, possibly sulpho soap and a brush the tools used. Surface-treated cast iron is cleaned regularly with a soft cloth or brush and mild soapy water. This is to avoid dirt that can get stuck. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents as they can damage the paint.
After several years, cast iron may need a refresh, then the product can be completely renovated with sandblasting and a new surface treatment and the product will appear brand new.
